The Cost of Complexity
Every line of code you write has a cost.
Not just the time it takes to write it. The real cost comes later—when someone needs to understand it, debug it, or change it.
I learned this the hard way at Amazon, watching teams struggle with systems that worked perfectly but were nearly impossible to modify.
The Trap We All Fall Into
As engineers, we love solving problems. We see a challenge and immediately start thinking about elegant solutions, design patterns, and scalable architectures.
But here’s the thing: complexity is easy. Simplicity is hard.
It’s easy to add a new service. It’s hard to question whether you need it.
It’s easy to create an abstraction layer. It’s hard to keep code flat and obvious.
It’s easy to use the latest framework. It’s hard to stick with boring, proven tools.
What I Learned Building Distributed Systems
After years of building systems at AWS that handle millions of requests, I’ve noticed a pattern:
The systems that last aren’t the most clever. They’re the most boring.
They do one thing well. They have clear boundaries. They fail in predictable ways.
When something breaks at 3 AM, you want to debug a system you can understand in five minutes, not spend an hour tracing through six layers of abstraction.
A Simple Question
Before you write your next microservice, add your next dependency, or create your next abstraction, ask yourself:
“Am I adding this because I need it, or because it’s interesting?”
Interesting code is fun to write. Simple code is easy to maintain.
And in production, boring and maintainable beats clever and complex every time.
